Arnoux Lachaux Nuits St. Georges Les Poisets

Although Les Poisets is a village wine the vineyard is well situated just below Les Cailles, one of the top Premier Crus in Nuits St Georges. The Arnoux portion of the vineyard has vines which are over sixty five years old. This is the former Domaine Robert Arnoux; Pascal Lachaux is the winemaker as well as son-in-law of the late Robert Arnoux.

Robert Arnoux Nuits St. Georges Les Poisets 2006 $580 per bottle

Burg "87-89 pts... Fairly strong reduction makes the nose impossible to fairly evaluate but the middle weight and nicely concentrated flavours confirm the quality of the underlying material and the level of extract here is particularly impressive as is the finishing depth. This is not an elegant wine but this clearly has more underlying material than the typical villages level wine."

Arnoux Lachaux Nuits St. Georges Les Poisets 2007 $498 per bottle

Burg "88-91 pts... Red, blue and violet suffused nose as well as on the slightly animale flavors that are rich, full and serious while possessing excellent mid-palate concentration that completely buffers the moderately firm tannins. A first-rate villages and recommended."

Arnoux Lachaux Nuits St. Georges Les Poisets 2008 $580 per bottle

Burg "87-90 pts... Here the nose is completely different with much more earth and animale influence though the aromatic profile is also very fresh as well as offering up slightly riper dark berry fruit that introduces rich, round and more concentrated and robust flavours that possess plenty of dry extract, all supported by a finish that oddly possesses dense but fine tannins yet is also on the rustic side. A wine of contrasts but a good one for its level as it has even a bit more underlying material than the Chambolle."

Arnoux Lachaux Nuits St. Georges Les Poisets 2009 $580 per bottle

Burg "89-91 pts... A fresh, earthy and borderline animale nose that is very Nuits in character complements the rich, intense and supple flavours that possess relatively fine tannins and excellent detail on the balanced and mouth coating finish. This is a lovely villages."

Bruno Clair Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode

The wines of Savigny often display a certain rusticity, which is absent here and commentators have noted that Bruno Clair's La Dominode has more of the character of a Cote de Nuits. The wine owes its character to vines planted in 1902 and the lightness of touch that Bruno and cellarmaster Philippe Brun bring to their work.

Bruno Clair Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2004 $590 per bottle

Burg "86 pts... An earthy, dark and relatively sombre nose that is densely fruited and serious with flavours that are still quite primary and relatively backward. There is a chewy tannic spine that coats the mouth and while I admire the depth and old vine intensity, this is likely to always have an edge to it and it may dry out with time in bottle. I would be inclined to drink this on the early side even though the tannic structure will not have resolved by then."

Bruno Clair Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2005 $690 per bottle

Burg "91 pts... A wonderfully complex earthy and spicy dark berry fruit nose leads to delicious, generous and fleshy middle weight flavours that are sweet, intense and quite finely structured, all wrapped in a finish of impressive length. This is quite firmly if deceptively structured as the tannic spine is completely buffered by the abundant sap. In a word, terrific."

Bruno Clair Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2006 $650 per bottle

Burg "88-91 pts... A distinctly, even pungently earthy dark berry fruit nose slides into rich, full, sweet and impressively concentrated flavours that possess fine dry extract levels as well as solid volume on the balanced, long and mouth coating finish. The old vine intensity is on parade and gives real vibrancy to this effort though note that this will require ample time to be at its best."

Bruno Clair Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2007 $650 per bottle

Burg "89 pts... A completely different and much earthier, even pungently so, nose of dark berry fruit that complements well the rich, full and serious flavours brimming with dry extract on the palate staining and impressively long finish. This is a powerful wine for Savigny and while it's nowhere close to the Vosne in terms of elegance and refinement, there is actually better depth here as the old vine sap really shows."

Bruno Clair Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2008 $650 per bottle

Burg "91 pts... A ripe and dense nose of high-toned red pinot fruit cut with ample amounts of plum, violets and Savigny-style earth that are very much in keeping with the rich, full, delicious and serious medium weight flavors that finish with fine intensity and plenty of sappy extract. The old vines and low yields are very much in evidence because in addition to the impressive intensity and sap, there is very good phenolic ripeness."

Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Loups

Do not search for Les Loups on the map: it actually a blend of grapes from the Le Village and La Riotte vineyards as well as fruit from the young vines of Clos des Lambrays. As usual the charming Thierry Brouin does a great job with this wine.

Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Loups 2005 $798 per bottle

Burg "91 pts... Here there is more aromatic elegance as well as depth with a broader spectrum of fruit aromas nuanced by spice and mineral hints that continue onto the rich, vibrant and intense medium full flavours underpinned by suave tannins and a detailed and wonderfully pure finish. Recommended."

Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Loups 2006 $780 per bottle

Burg "90 pts... This too is very pinot but slightly cooler, fresher and more elegant with a pretty blend of red berry fruit, underbrush, stone and the barest trace of animale that also extends to the rich and nicely full flavours that offer a relatively suave mid-palate and solid finishing precision. This seems to have added some much needed weight since it was bottled and the overall quality is quite good."

Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Loups 2007 $790 per bottle

Burg "90 pts... This offers a notable step up in aromatic elegance with subtly spiced red and blue pinot fruit aromas that give way to more textured yet just as supple flavours that retain a fine sense of underlying detail. This has already added depth relative to the cask sample reviewed last year and it should be capable of adding more over the next 5 years or so."

Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Loups 2008 $780 per bottle

Burg "91 pts... A more deeply pitched and distinctly more complex nose combines the same purity of expression with the red pinot fruit, warm earth, floral notes and a discreet hint of animale that carries over to the refined and more concentrated medium-bodied flavours that display a subtle mineral streak on the solidly persistent finish that also evidences better phenolic maturity. Lovely."

Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru

The Confuron domaine owns half a hectare of this great Vosne Romanee grand cru, with vines planted in 1929. Winemaking is under the control of Alain Meunier, the son-in-law of JJ Confuron. While the Confuron wines show style and consistency throughout the range their Romanee St Vivant is in a class of its own.

Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2003 $1,980 per bottle

Burg "90 pts... An unmistakable notch up in elegance with elegant and highly complex spicy black fruit aromas that introduce much more refined and sophisticated mouth coating flavours underpinned by serious length and perhaps the best balance of any of these '03s."

Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2004 $1,980 per bottle

Burg "90 pts... As it almost always is, this is the class of the Confuron stable and it is also the ripest wine with its soaring nose of high-toned and very spicy black pinot fruit nuanced by tea, crushed herb and anise notes that highlight the wonderfully elegant, pure and sweet medium weight flavours that finish with a flourish of mocha, plum and more spice. There is a lovely subtlety to this wine that is all finesse but the length suggests that this may develop more power over time."

Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2005 $3,900 per bottle

Burg "95 pts... A classically elegant, pure, expressive and ultra refined nose that is positively kaleidoscopic in its breadth with wonderfully enticing perfumed black fruit and Asian spice notes that can also be found on the classy, fine, mineral-infused and sweet flavors that are seductively textured, long and gorgeously balanced. This is particularly stylish but with fantastic depth and punch. This is at present almost strict and will require plenty of time but make no mistake, it's a real stunner of a wine."

Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2006 $2,280 per bottle

Burg "94 pts... As is usually the case, there is an extra dimension of aromatic depth and breadth with superior elegance as well though that is of course to be expected. The notably ripe yet fresh and pure nose ranges from red, blue and black crushed fruit aromas nuanced by spice, floral and subtle earth hints that are picked up on the intense, concentrated and hugely long finish. This has just as much dry extract as the Clos de Vougeot and the length here is stunning plus in this case, the class definitely shows."

Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2007 $2,280 per bottle

Burg "94 pts... As it usually is, this is considerably more elegant and refined than the Clos de Vougeot with airy, pure and stylish aromas that possess real lift as well as a beautiful, and beguiling, array of spice elements on the ripe red pinot fruit that is quite dense and this density continues onto the supple, intense and focused middle weight flavours that display an almost aggressive minerality as well as a delicious, long and explosive finish. This classy offering is simply at another level compared to all the other wines in the range."

Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2008 $2,280 per bottle

Burg "93 pts... There is a background touch of reduction to the otherwise elegant nose of spicy and earthy red and black pinot fruit that is nuanced by subtle traces of soy and anise that are picked up on the rich, deep, round, sappy and mouth coating flavours that display a discreet but attractive mineral streak on the hugely long finish. This is terrific and the old vine character is very much in evidence - be sure to decant it if you're going to try a bottle young."

Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee St. Vivant Grand Cru 2009 $2,880 per bottle

Burg "94 pts... As it always is, this is elegant and ethereal as the floral, red berry and spice suffused nose merges seamlessly into lacy, delicate and quite supple middle weight flavours that possess just a hint of minerality on the hugely long and palate staining finish where a touch of wood toast can also be seen. This is beautifully well-balanced and less overtly ripe and an obvious wine of class and grace."
