Elegant and Mature Shiraz

Wine lovers around the world are now well acquainted with the strength in depth that Australian wine can offer with a wide range of styles emerging from a bewildering array of regions. However it’s always a pleasure to revisit what Australia does best, that is Shiraz from the traditional heartlands of South Australia, with the Barossa and Care Valleys well to the fore. When sourced from unirrigated, low yielding old vines these can be miraculous long-lived wines which reveal layers of flavour and subtle nuances. 2009 was a challenging vintage in these regions with low rainfall and high temperatures. Yields were down but this has had the result of concentrating the flavours and after five to six years in bottle these wines are really hitting their stride and showing what they are capable of.

Prestigious Champagne
The delightful sparkling beverage which we know as Champagne owes its existence to a unique combination of geography, history and chemistry. The Champagne region is located in north-eastern France where grapes struggle to achieve full maturity but the high acidity which is a natural result of these challenging conditions is a key component in the style of Champagne. The terrain has been part of major trade routes for centuries, good for business in major markets but also ensuring that it has been the site of major battles between warring powers since the Roman Empire. A high percentage of chalk in the soil is a major contributor to the character of the regions wines.
