Cooler days for cheese and Port

While Port has been imitated, with varying degrees of success, in winemaking regions around the world, true Port originates in the Douro valley of Portugal. It takes its name from Oporto, the city at the mouth of the Douro River which is the traditional centre of the Port trade. In most cases the wines are shipped to Oporto in the spring following the vintage where it is matured in casks until ready to be bottled. Quinta da Noval is an exception, choosing to mature its wines in cellars upriver. The many styles of Port can be confusing to the neophyte but this is a style of wine which rewards exploration. It is a very versatile wine: aged tawny Port can be enjoyed slightly chilled as an aperitif but most Port is consumed at the end of a meal when it is a perfect accompaniment to cheese, nuts, chocolate and dried fruit.

 Tuesday Wonders:
Puligny Montrachet Village and Premier Cru

For many lovers of fine white Burgundy, Puligny occupies a position at the apex of the quality pyramid. The Premier Cru wines can approach Grand Cru level in quality, not surprisingly as many of them share similar soils and elevations as the Montrachet Grand Crus. It is the combination of perfume and a backbone of steely acidity which distinguish the white wines of Puligny from its neighbours. An exploration of the varying combinations of vineyard, producer and vintage can be a fascinating and rewarding exercise. Cailleret, with less than four hectares under vine, is probably the vineyard which enjoys the highest reputation but Pucelles, Les Combettes and Foltieres are capable of achieving similar class.

Rare and Fine Claret Collection

We have just received a parcel of hard to find, mostly mature, gems from Bordeaux, including some very old vintages sourced from private cellars in France. The selection includes classic vintages such as 1945, 1947 and 1959 which are highly sought after by collectors. These bottles have excellent provenance and are all in good condition (except where stated). We are happy to supply photographs of individual bottles on request.
